Background Research

35 billion mobile phone applications are estimated to have been downloaded in October 2012. The proposed system is an “IADT Mobile Phone Application”. To date IADT does not have a mobile application available and have not implemented a mobile-friendly (responsive) design on their website. This creates limited methods of communication and interaction between the students and IADT. The limited connection methods may cause problems in students accessing college facilities, timetable, events or emails. The aim is to use modern technology to support the IADT student’s needs and wants in college .The idea of the design was influenced and motivated by various other universities who have similar applications to aid college life. The proposed idea is to develop an application tailored to the unique characteristics of the IADT student population. The goal is to make the IADT mobile application useful, accessible and easy to use for the diverse IADT population.

research

The IADT population is extremely diverse i.e. Age, gender, needs, roles and technical abilities. The life of a student is becoming more reliant on modern technology such as a Smartphone. By end of 2012, 71% of Irish population is expected to own a Smartphone, 41% to own a tablet. We believe this justifies the need for an IADT mobile application.

We propose to develop an application that will help students have access to important college facilities at the touch of a button.  Using a portable device that includes the relevant college facilities eliminates accessibility problems such as location. Smartphones are an effective method communication and connectivity. The team believes that an IADT mobile application will allow the college to finally utilise the advantages smartphones have to offer.
